The role of scanning in operational control
In a logistics flow, barcode scanning checks that the physical product matches the item expected at that stage. The confirmation happens before the operation continues, which helps catch mismatches at the points where the goods change status.
Scan data is matched to the operations managed in the WMS. Depending on how the project is set up, checkpoints can be built into goods receiving, the picking process and the step before shipment, when products ready to leave are checked against the operation recorded in the system.
Identifying the item
The barcode identifies the product entering the operation and compares it with the information expected in the system.
Validating the work step
The product is confirmed at the checkpoint set for the flow, before moving on to the next step.
Updating the WMS record
The scan confirmation is linked to the operation recorded in the WMS, so the record follows the physical flow of the goods.
